Hello friends!
Today I’m excited to walk you through my plan for starting seeds (early) this spring!
TBH, I’ve never previously been super successful with seed starting indoors… either the seeds didn’t make it, or they didn’t transplant, or I messed up the timing, you name it.
However, I’m determined to figure it out – so I’m giving it another go this year!
AND!!!
I had a really special helper, who loved getting to add seeds into the soil, and it was completely a dream come true moment for this mama. Like legit heart melting.
So here’s a little video recap of what we did:
But I thought I’d also walk through a more thorough explanation, both for myself to reference later (if this works) and for you to reference too!
This year I decided to keep it simple:
- I planted a variety of things, but not so many I forget about them.
- For most varieties, I gave 6 slots (so 18 seeds), figuring this was a good enough “test” to see if it works, without wasting the whole seed packet.
- I decided to use egg cartons, because they are compostable and I can easily cut/rip them and place them directly in the ground (in the past I’ve had issues with root disruption and I thought this was a great way to hopefully avoid that).
- I then put the egg cartons in plastic containers, because I don’t have a grow light or humidifier. The one time I was successful with seed starting I used these containers and they worked great for me! So I have high hopes.
- I also put a few in ziplock bags, mostly because I had three extra egg cartons and no more clear totes. So I’m curious to see if this method works, especially because the egg cartons didn’t fully fit in the ziplock, so some of the seed “pods” are sticking out.
- It’s warm enough here that I have my containers outside during the day, and then bring them in at night. If it’s still really cold where you live, I’d leave them in the sunniest spot in your house!
And that’s it!
Like I said, I’m curious to see how things turn out! I’m honestly not *too* worried about it, because we have a decent growing season and I’ve had great success with direct sowing into the ground… but I wanted to try anyways, because if I can get a head start on something things, Ill take it!
Here’s a few more details:
